Product Use

Biosolids are used as soil conditioner and fertilizer for forests, agriculture, landscapes, and gardens. All the nutrients and organic matter in biosolids enrich the soil and support healthy plant growth. Biosolids are also used to restore and reclaim severely damaged soils, such as old mine or construction sites. Biosolids have even been used to restore old logging roads and wetlands.

Many types of biosolids products exist, such as:

  • straight biosolids or cake
  • soil mixes
  • composts
  • pellet or liquid fertilizers

Biosolids are used in agriculture, forestry, landscapes and gardens, and soil improvement and land reclamation.

How are biosolids recycled across the Pacific Northwest?

The Pacific Northwest recycles about 91% of our biosolids. It’s a necessary part of living and yet the measure of biosolids worth and existence often goes unnoticed. The interactive map below illustrates how biosolids were recycled in our region in 2015 among our member utilities.
