WA State General Permit for Biosolids

The Washington State Dept. of Ecology announced their determination that the general permit under WAC-173-308 is the best approach to implementing the statewide program. This is following a complete review of comments, of which Northwest Biosolids comments were included, on the preliminary notice to issue a revised general permit.

U.S. Biosolids Program Update

Bob Bastian retired from the U.S. EPA this month after 48 years in his career with EPA. Bob has been active in numerous committees and projects evaluating biosolids and wastewater throughout his career including the National Academy of Sciences. Northwest Biosolids would like to congratulate Bob on this incredible achievement and best wishes in his retirement.

Jim Ryan who was a lead biosolids researcher at the EPA's Office of Research & Development in developing the federal biosolids regulations has recently passed away. Jim was also pivotal in advancing biosolids use in restoring degraded lands. Northwest Biosolids sends our condolences to his family and friends.

California PFAS Sampling Update

The California State Water Resources Control Board issued a state order that will require sampling for PFAS in influent, effluent, and biosolids. This is projected to start by the end of the year with quarterly sampling required.  Review the state order here for more details.
